One Child at a Time
Grant Bowles was moved to be a mentor one day and he didn’t even know it. He witnessed a young girl, probably 4 or 5 years old wandering around on a busy street in the Highlands neighborhood. He walked the girl home and was appalled at what he saw when he got there. The next day he walked into Highlands Elementary school and offered his time wherever they needed it. They directed him to Communities In Schools of Renton and now, six years later, he has mentored four boys.

Family Liaison Program

The Communities In Schools of Renton (CISR) Family Liaison (FL) Program offers Renton public school students and their families access to direct services to bring balance to their lives. CISR Family Liaisons are housed in Renton school buildings and receive referrals from teachers, administrators, counselors, nurses, other staff, parents, and even students. The student's need could appear in many different ways--maybe the student is falling asleep in class, arriving late to school every day, bullying someone at school, or not paying attention during class.

Academic Liaison Program

The Renton School District (RSD) and Communities In Schools of Renton (CISR), with funding from the Seattle Foundation, established the Academic Liaison Program (ALP) at Dimmitt, McKnight and Nelsen Middle Schools, in January 2010.  The ALP is an integral part of fulfilling the mission of RSD and CISR; more specifically the program supports the "Getting to Graduation" goals set forth by the Renton School District.  The overall goal of the Academic Liaison Program is to help students develop the habits of scholarship and resilience necessary to succeed in high school before transitioning to ninth grade.

During the 2010-2011 school year, Academic Liaisons provided over 200 students with support.
