Welcome to Communities In Schools of Renton
Connecting students in need with the help they deserve.
Every young person has the potential to succeed and grow into a productive member of our society. For those who face circumstances that require a little extra - a lift up - we are there, in their school, responding quickly to connect them with the community resources to help them succeed in school.
Communities In Schools: the only dropout prevention program in the nation proven to increase graduation rates.
What sets Communities In Schools apart is the way we coordinate a comprehensive range of services to achieve whole-child support. We do this by placing staff—family and academic liaisons—inside schools to connect students at risk of dropping out with a vast array of community resources and services.
Communities In Schools of Renton is committed to helping students and their families, free of charge, reach balance in their lives and regain self-sufficiency through our:
- Mentor Program
- Family Liaison Program
- Academic Liaison Program
- Step Up Mentoring Program
Our community benefits from a multitude of organizations working to help young people succeed—from clothing and food banks, to health care, to civic and service groups. Our family and academic liaisons maximize the effectiveness of these organizations by directly linking students and families to specific community resources.

Complementing this work, we recruit and train a community of volunteer mentors who provide positive adult role modeling, help with academic and life issues, and set the expectation for success. These everyday heroes become like second family to struggling youth, supporting our kids in ways no other program can match.
By pairing critical, targeted assistance with relationship-based support, Communities In Schools of Renton accomplishes true whole-child support. Students perform significantly better in school and develop the confidence and self esteem they need to make a better future for themselves. We don’t just help young people, we help young people transform.
Communities In Schools understands that schools can't do it alone. Our school-based coordinators work directly with challenged students and connects them with mentors and tutors, social services, healthcare, nutrition and other services. In the schools we serve our help results in higher graduation rates and increased proficiency in math and reading.
This PSA was made possible by the generous support of Comcast Cable and was created and produced by Mark Notermann with help from Lisa Halpern and Jose Gonzales.
